課程概述

Eigenvalue Problems, Special Functions and Orthogonal Polynomials, Boundary value problems and Partial Differential Equations, Variational Methods, Introduction to Group Theory.

The aim of the course is to introduce basic tools of theoretical physics to students.

There will be Mid-Term, Final and a number of homework assignments, precise weighting to be decided. 

課程目標
Part 1: Introduction to Special Functions
a. Eigenvalue/Sturm-Liouville Problems.
b. Special Functions, their generating functions
and various properties such as orthogonality and recurrence relation.

Part 2: Partial Differential Equations.
a. Separation of Variables
b. Green's Function, Boundary valued problems.
c. Integral Transforms.

Part 3: Introduction to Group Theory.

a. Conservation Law and Symmetries in Physics.
b. Lie Algebra, Lie groups and their representations
c. Generators; SU(2), SU(3), Young Diagrams.
d. Lorentz group and its representations.
 
課程要求
Knowledge of Applied Mathematics III is Highly Desirable.
